The Ukrainian language is a key component of Ukrainian statehood, so protecting and developing the language, we protect and develop the Ukrainian state.
On the eve of celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence, the State Language Protection Commissioner Taras Kremin discussed the functioning of the language law on-air of Ukrainian Radio.
“The Law “On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language” has been in force for two years already, and most of its articles have come into force. In addition, the latest analytical and sociological research show that Ukrainian is used more and more in the public space. It means the Law ensured the functioning of the state language in all public spheres. However, there are some violations and we need to talk about them”, – Taras Kremin said.
The Commissioner reminded that a new stage of implementation of the language law began on July 16. In particular, part VI of Article 23 on obligatoriness of showing films and serials in the state language came into force.
"However, some TV channels recourse to obvious sabotage of the law. Those TV channels that have been blocking the broadcasting of films and TV series in Ukrainian since July 16 should be reminded of steadfast implementation of laws, the Constitution and the decision of the Constitutional Court which defined that the Law on Language is completely constitutional. According to the historic decision of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine of July 14, the Ukrainian language is a key component of Ukrainian statehood, so its protection and development is equal to the protection and development of Ukraine. Due to independence, Ukrainians are finally free in communicating in the Ukrainian language and should appreciate it”, – Taras Kremin emphasized.
