The State Language Protection Commissioner Taras KREMIN reminds that according to Article 30 of the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian as the State Language", since January 16, 2021 all service providers, irrespective of the form of ownership, are obliged to serve consumers and provide information on goods and services in the state language.
“In a supermarket and online store, at a café, bank, gas station, pharmacy or library, wherever you are - the provision of services must be in Ukrainian. Only upon request of customer his personal service may be made in another language", - Taras Kremin emphasizes.
The Commissioner noted that in case of violation of the rights to receive information and services in Ukrainian, customers should contact the Secretariat of the Commissioner (01001, Kyiv, 12 Muzeinyi Lane; e-mail: kremin@kmu.gov.ua)
In the field of customer service, the provisions of the Law (Article 30, since 16.01.2021) stipulate that the customer service language in Ukraine is the state language. Enterprises, institutions and organizations of all forms of ownership, individual entrepreneurs, other business entities that serve consumers (except for the cases established by part III of this article), provide services and information on goods (services), including via the Internet shops and online catalogs, in the state language. Information in the state language may be duplicated in other languages.
Upon request of customer his personal service may be also made in another language acceptable to the parties.
An e-commerce entity registered in Ukraine, during its activity and in case of distribution of a commercial e-mail message, is obliged to provide all information, specified by the Law of Ukraine "On Electronic Commerce" including on the subject of the electronic contract, in the state language.
Information on goods and services on the territory of Ukraine shall be provided in the state language, taking into account the special aspects specified in Article 33 of the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian as the State Language".
Manufacturers (providers, sales personnel) in Ukraine of all forms of ownership provide consumers with information on products (goods), works or services in the state language. Such information may be duplicated in any other language.
Information on products (goods), works or services, specified in part VI of this article, shall be brought to the notice of the consumer in the manner, way and scope specified by the Law of Ukraine "On Consumer Rights Protection".
Information on products (goods), works or services provided in the state language may include words, acronyms, abbreviations and symbols in English and/or with the use of letters of the Latin and/or Greek alphabets.
If information on goods and services is also provided in languages other than the state language, the amount of information on goods and services in the state language may not be less than the mandatory amount of information in accordance with the requirements set by the Law of Ukraine "On Consumer Rights Protection".
