The Committee of Experts of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages published a statement regarding the inadmissibility of the russian federation's use of the status of the russian language as a minority language as a pretext for aggression against Ukraine.

The Committee strongly condemned the aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine and expressed its solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The statement also states that, in the context of ongoing monitoring, the Committee of Experts visited Ukraine in July 2021 and noted the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities to implement the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and identified areas in which measures were needed to ensure the proper protection of all minority languages.

Taras Kremin, commenting on the relevant statement, emphasized that it’s extremely important and timely for Ukraine.

"It is important that the Council of Europe approved the arguments of Ukraine, including our team, that the development of the state language did not cause any oppression of either russian or other minority languages," Taras Kremin noted.

"The statement of the Council of Europe on the eve of the decision on Ukraine's membership in the EU is another argument for the irreversibility of Ukraine's European perspective," he concluded.
