On April 5, State Language Protection Commissioner Taras Kremin held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Finland to Ukraine, Mr. Jaakko Lehtovirta, during which the parties discussed issues related to the implementation of language legislation in Ukraine.
Taras Kremin informed Mr. Lekhtovirta on the work of his institution on the issue of protecting the Ukrainian language as the state language, as well as analyzing the state of affairs in the territories temporarily occupied by the russian aggressor. In addition, the Commissioner asked Mr. Ambassador to assist by the Finnish part in providing language needs for Ukrainians living in Finland and to launch studies on Ukrainian history and culture at the University of Helsinki.
The Language Ombudsman thanked Mr. Ambassador for the support of the Finnish part, namely the Institute for the Languages of Finland (Kotimaisten kielten keskus/Institutet för de inhemska språken), as to Ukraine's accession to the European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL) in March 2022 and expressed hope for further deepening of cooperation between the language institutions of both countries. Also, Mr. Kremin congratulated Mr. Lekhtovirta on a significant event for Finland took place on April the 4th - country's accession to NATO.
Mr. Andrii Vitrenko, a Representative of the Commissioner joined the meeting as well.
