Today is the first anniversary of Ukraine's accession to the European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL).
Recall that on March 21, 2022, at an extraordinary meeting of the General Assembly of the European Federation of National Institutions for Language, Ukraine was granted the status of an associate member of the organisation by unanimous decision of its members.
"Joining the European Federation of National Institutions for Language is a confident step towards the standards of the European community, new opportunities for the exchange of experience and best European language practices, as well as the protection and popularization of Ukrainian as the future language of the European Union. Joining this respected linguistic community, Ukraine is for the first time involved in the processes of language policy formation on the European continent. Today we continue to inform our European partners about the language situation in Ukraine and the consequences of russia's full-scale invasion in the context of discriminatory actions of the occupants against Ukrainians based on language," Taras Kremin said.
According to Taras Kremin, during the year the Secretariat of the Commissioner regularly informs EFNIL about the facts of the linguocide of the Ukrainian language in the temporarily occupied territories, systematically sending relevant materials to the organization.
In October last year, Ukraine joined the General Assembly of the European Federation of National Institutions for Language as an associate member for the first time. At the meeting, the Commissioner, in particular, presented a report on the russian policy of linguocide in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
The Commissioner thanked his European colleagues for the systematic support of Ukraine and his institution , in particular.
Taras Kremin has held meetings with many leaders of the national language institutions of Europe, participated in the plenary sessions of EFNIL, and contributed to the dissemination of positive experiences in the implementation of European language legislation in Ukraine.
Today, EFNIL unites all the leading national language institutions in Europe. Monitoring the implementation of language legislation, protecting state languages, collecting materials on language policy in the EU, and encouraging the study of official European languages for linguistic and cultural diversity in the EU are among the main tasks of the organization.
