posted 03 March 2022 16:30

The leading language institutions in Europe, addressed by the State Language Protection Commissioner, have supported Ukraine.

Director General of the Estonian Language Inspectorate, well-known children's writer and statesman Ilmar Tomusk assured that “Estonia in these difficult times is together with the people of Ukraine. Churches pray, they support the people as they can. Glory to Ukraine!".

The Estonian Academy of Sciences and its President, Professor Tarmo Soomere called on all academies of the world to support the people of Ukraine. "The war in Ukraine is a nightmare in the heart of Europe and a cruel alarm for all the nations. The academies of science are obliged to provide the best advice to their countries and governments in such situations to de-escalate the war, "the statement said.

“The Estonian Academy of Sciences, as the Chair of the European Members of the International Scientific Council (ISC) and the Chair of the European Forum of Scientific Advisers, calls on all academies and key research advisers across Europe to take into account the need to join struggle for their own future, so use all possible actions to weaken the aggressor's position and further de-escalation”.

The Latvian Language Agency expresses its full support to Ukraine, our people and refugees. This was stated by the Director of the Latvian Language Agency, Professor Janis Valdmanis who contributes in every way to the development of language policy in the EU member states.

He said that in order to provide the most important information about the possibility of providing and receiving support to the civilian population of Ukraine, a single information line "Assistance to Ukrainians in Latvia" was created and launched by the Foundation for Integration of Society. In particular, we are talking about assistance in crossing the border, obtaining a residence permit, housing, work, food, medicine, schools for children.

In his open address, Ivars Kalvins, President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Academician, Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, noted that our Latvian friends are taking all further necessary measures to support the people of Ukraine.

“We, the Latvian Academy of Sciences, would like all those who respect the right of peoples to self-determination, freedom and life, categorically condemn the unprecedented military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Ukraine has not taken any hostile action against the territory of the Russian Federation, its military facilities or civilian infrastructure, or against its people, which could be a formal pretext for military aggression. "

The Latvian Academy of Sciences expresses its full support for Ukraine as a country and its freedom-loving people in the fight against the aggressor.

"We call on all governments of the world to take immediate and effective measures to stop Russian aggression and restore Ukraine's sovereign rights to its territory, as it was the case before the annexation of Crimea and the start of Russian-backed separatist fighting in Donbas," the statement said.

"We demand that the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of Belarus to give an objective assessment of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and to do everything possible to prevent bloodshed on the territory of the sovereign state - the independent state of Ukraine."

"We are with you, people of Ukraine!", - the statement of the Latvian Academy of Sciences said.
