The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin held an online meeting with Professor Maris Baltins, Director of the Latvian State Language Center
The parties discussed issues related to the possibility of borrowing the experience of Latvia in the implementation of language legislation. In particular, the method of monitoring by the State Language Center, the mechanisms of state control, as well as the functioning of the network of senior inspectors, the council of public assistants (social assistants), which help prevent or signal violations of language legislation.
The functions of the Center for the Translation of EU and NATO Legal Documents, Ensuring the Functioning of the Latvian Language in the EU Institutions, as well as the mechanisms for implementing the state language policy are of interest to Ukraine. Among the original embodiments of digital monitoring in Latvia is the Center's mobile application "Language Friend", which enables the public to report on possible violations of the state language, or to thank a Latvian company, media or website that helps protect the state language. To do this, simply register and send a photo or video violation or a thank you note with explanations of the address of the state institution.
Taras Kremin stressed the importance of deepening further cooperation with European institutions that ensure the functioning of the state language through the implementation of effective language policy. "The experience of the Latvian State Language Center is a new horizon of how the Ukrainian language can be developed, as well as to protect the rights of Ukrainian citizens to receive information and services in the state language," the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language said.
