Today, there is a high demand for learning the Ukrainian language and strengthening the humanitarian front in the south and east of Ukraine. Taras Kremin said it for the Channel 5, commenting on the news about the liquidation of the Department of russian Language and Literature at V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University, which will be replaced by the Department of Slavic Philology.
"The idea of optimizing departments and faculties is not a new one. This is not an event of 2022. Such innovations have been taking place in recent years as to the change in the contingent of students and teaching staff. The problem with the selection of students to Kharkiv universities exists. One of the stimulus measures that I discussed with the Minister of Education and Science, Serhii Shkarlet, is a target-oriented order for the specialty "Ukrainian language and literature". We all understand how important it is for the country, especially for the south and the east, where there are no departments of Ukrainian philology," Taras Kremin said.
According to the Commissioner, without the intervention of the Ministry of Education and Science, without an effective proposal from specific rectors, it will be very difficult to restore interest in the study of the Ukrainian language and literature in institutions of higher education and to update the teaching staff in institutions of general secondary education.
"In the conditions of war, there should be an increase in the state order for those specialties that determine the principles of national security. I believe that Ukrainian philology is our national defense and national security. To build a successful Ukrainian future, we must increase the number of teachers of the Ukrainian language and literature, open new Ukrainian studies studios, expand the network of free courses for internally displaced persons, stimulate the culture of reading, and also strictly implement the laws on language and education. Our task is to strengthen the humanitarian front in the east and south of the country," Taras Kremin emphasized.
