The State Language Protection Commissioner Taras Kremin emphasizes that attempts of the Ukrainian MPs to postpone or cancel fines for violating Article 30 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language” are prospectless as they do not correspond to the Constitution and the Laws of Ukraine. He said this on the air for UA: FIRST TV channel.
The draft laws introduced by the MPs to change the language law envisage the removal or postponement of Article 57 of the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Functioning of Ukrainian as the State Language". It regulates the Commissioner’s right to impose fines for willful violations of the language law. This article has been already in effect. No rule of law envisages the postponement or removal of those articles of the laws of Ukraine that have already come into force. It seems to me that every high school student knows that”, – Taras Kremin explained.
He also stressed that such draft laws are not supported by the Main Scientific and Expert Department of the Verkhovna Rada Secretariat, by the Ministry of Justice and, most importantly, by the society. “As the State Language Protection Commissioner, I am totally against such bills that deprive the Ukrainian state of the opportunity to control the implementation of the language law and of the mechanisms of responding to gross violations of its norms. On the contrary, I am in favor of maximum protection of the right of Ukrainian citizens to receive information and services in the state language”, – he stressed.
Taras Kremin thanked everyone who joined the collection of signatures in defense of the language law.
